Surface Flies

SURFACE – dry flies and emerges for both still water and rivers.

Photography by Carney Turner

Both excellent for still water and for trout and grayling.
This is a must for still waters from mid June onwards. When the green midge is ‘on', trout can be preoccupied. This pattern really did well all over the U.K. last season.

When first used on the River Suir in Ireland , Trevor had a party with him. As occasionally happens following a casting accident, the fly was stuck in Trevor's ear. When he asked for help, and when everyone stopped falling about laughing, successful fishing commenced. However, the name Morgan's Ear has remained and at least proves that Trevor can take a joke! Not only did he catch 12 trout from ¾ lb to 1 ½ lb on the Suir, but this fly has done exceptionally well on the River Test, rivers in the Midlands and Scotland .

The dressing is quite simple with the body of fox squirrel and four turns of fine flat gold. It fishes best on the rivers early and late season and when the water is slightly coloured.
